Andrea mcWilliams

Andrea McWilliams is a native El Pasoan who graduated from Brown University in 2012 with a BA in Anthropology. Andrea was involved in the Peer-Led Team Learning Program and served as a Peer Leader for General Chemistry. Andrea helped to create the first edition of “Facilitating Team-Based Learning: A Peer Leader’s Guide to Leading Learning Activities” and joined the LFAC board in 2019. Currently, Andrea is a third-year medical student at TTUHSC’s Paul L. Foster School of Medicine. 

Dr. Mahesh Narayan

Mahesh Narayan is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. A biophysicist by training and practice, he enjoys authorship of over 120 research and review articles book chapters, educational texts, laboratory manuals and reflective works and pieces. He has broad interests in physics, mathematics, quantum intervention in neurodegeneration and the molecular basis of consciousness along with back-of-the-envelope approximations to problems, in fact, any problem. He remains Chief of the Biochemistry division in the department.

Dr. James Becvar

Professor of Chemistry, Ph. D., University of Michigan, 1973, Biophysics. Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Texas at El Paso.  Dr. Becvar started as a faculty member at UTEP in 1978.  He oversees the PLTL Program in Chemistry at UTEP which began in 2000 in first semester general chemistry and has grown to 59 PLs in fall 2022.  Dr Becvar is Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Peer-Led Learning, an on-line journal of the Peer-Led Team Learning International Society.  He conducts biochemical research using luminescent organisms for prospecting of new biologically active compounds and identifying individual toxins and metabolically inhibitory substances in natural products, synthetic preparations, and environmental samples [US Patents 6,017,722; 6,340,572; 6,673,563].

Sergio Saucedo joined the Lead For America Corporation board in the Summer of 2022. Sergio Saucedo obtained a B.S. in Biochemistry from The University of Texas at El Paso, where he was awarded the Presidential Scholarship. During his time at UTEP, Sergio was a Second Semester General Chemistry peer leader and served as the Explorations Manager and Workbook Revisions Officer. 

Sergio is currently a medical student at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine. His research interests include cell-mediated and gene therapy for the treatment of Hematological-Oncologic diseases. After obtaining his MD, Sergio plans on specializing in cancer care and research.

Dr. Eva Deemer

Dr. Eva Deemer

Eva has served as a board member for Lead For America
Corporation since 2017 and has served as secretary of the board since 2018.

Dr. Eva Deemer  currently serves as Chief Scientist at Advanced Technology Applications Group
Inc. and Chief Technology Officer for Atlas Sensor Technologies. Dr. Deemer is also a postdoctoral fellow working in the inland Desalination Systems (CIDS) and UTEP One-water cluster, the NSF funded engineering research center Nano-Enabled Water Treatment (NEWT), and the DOE National Alliance for Water Innovation (NAWI). 

Dr. Jessica Salazar

Jessica G Salazar graduated from The University of Texas at El Paso in 2013 with her Bachelor of Science in Physics and in 2015 with her Master of Science in Physics. She continued her education at Vanderbilt University where she earned her Doctorate of Medical Physics in 2015.  She is a diplomate of the American Board of Radiology and the American Board of Society in Nuclear Medicine. Jessica served as a peer leader at The University of Texas at El Paso from 2011 through 2013. In 2013 she was the editor and co-author of the first workbook for the peer-led team learning workshops at UTEP. In 2015 she joined the board of directors for Lead For America Corporation as the first member of the board to be a former peer leader.

Dr. Jose Peralta-Videa

Jose Peralta-Videa obtained a BS in Agronomy from the National Agricultural University of Nicaragua in 1975, MS in Agricultural Sciences from the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center, Costa Rica 1978, PhD in Genetics and Plant Breeding from the Postgraduate College at Chapingo, Mexico in 1983, and PhD in Environmental Science and Engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), US in 2002. He serves as Research Specialist and Adjunct Professor in the UTEP Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.  In 2020, he was among the Top 2% most cited researchers in the world. He currently serves as Associate Editor of Frontiers in Plant Science- Crop and Product Physiology. His research interests encompass the study of the physiological and biochemical effects of engineered nanomaterials in plants and the phytoremediation of heavy metals.
